How to Get Rid of Ants Naturally

Ants are one of the most common household pests that can be a nuisance. They can invade your kitchen, pantry, and other parts of your home in search of food and water. While there are many chemical insecticides available in the market to get rid of ants, they may not always be safe for your family and pets. Fortunately, you can use natural ingredients to repel and eliminate ants effectively. In this article, we will discuss some effective ways to get rid of ants naturally.

1. Use Vinegar

Vinegar is an excellent natural ingredient to repel ants. Mix equal parts of vinegar and water and use it to wipe down surfaces where you have seen ant trails. You can also spray the solution around windowsills, doorways, and other areas where ants can enter your home. The strong scent of vinegar will repel ants and keep them away from your home.

If you have a severe ant infestation, you can use pure vinegar without diluting it. Spray the vinegar directly on the ant trails, and it will kill them instantly. However, avoid using vinegar on marble, granite, or other natural stone surfaces as it can etch the surface.

2. Use Essential Oils

Essential oils such as peppermint, eucalyptus, cinnamon, and tea tree oil are effective natural remedies to repel ants. You can mix a few drops of essential oil with water and spray it around the areas where ants can enter your home. Alternatively, you can soak a cotton ball with essential oil and place it near ant trails or entry points.

The strong scent of essential oils will confuse ants' sense of smell and prevent them from entering your home. You can also use essential oils to clean your kitchen and pantry shelves to keep ants away from food sources.

3. Use Diatomaceous Earth

Diatomaceous earth is a natural powder made from fossilized diatoms that can effectively kill ants. It works by dehydrating ants' exoskeleton, causing them to die. Sprinkle diatomaceous earth around ant entry points or infested areas and leave it for a few days. Repeat the process until all ants are eliminated.

Make sure to use food-grade diatomaceous earth that is safe for humans and pets. Avoid inhaling the powder as it can irritate your lungs.

4. Use Baking Soda and Sugar

Baking soda and sugar can be used as a natural bait to lure ants. Mix equal parts of baking soda and sugar and sprinkle the mixture near ant trails or entry points. Ants will be attracted to the sugar but will consume the baking soda, which will cause gas to build up in their stomachs, leading to their death.

Repeat the process until all ants are eliminated. Keep in mind that baking soda can be harmful to pets if ingested, so use it with caution.

5. Seal Cracks and Crevices

One of the best ways to prevent ants from entering your home is to seal cracks and crevices in walls, floors, and foundations. Use caulk or weather stripping to seal gaps around windows, doors, and pipes. Check for cracks and gaps in your walls and fill them with spackling paste.

Trim trees and bushes away from your house to prevent ants from using them as a bridge to enter your home. Keeping your home clean and free of food debris can also discourage ants from entering your home.
