How to Make a Pumpkin Bird Feeder in 7 Easy Steps

As autumn approaches, you may notice the birds in your backyard starting to prepare for winter. Why not lend them a helping hand by making a pumpkin bird feeder? Not only will it bring more feathered friends to your garden, but it’s also a great way to use up leftover pumpkins from Halloween. In this article, we’ll guide you through the steps of making one, so you can enjoy the sight of happy birds snacking all winter long.

Step 1: Choose Your Pumpkin

The first step is to choose a pumpkin that is still firm and unblemished. It should be large enough to hold a good amount of birdseed, but not too big that it starts to get heavy once filled. Cut off the top of the pumpkin and set it aside – this will become the lid later on.

Step 2: Scoop Out the Seeds and Strands

Using a spoon or a scoop, remove all the seeds and strands from the inside of the pumpkin. You can save the seeds for roasting later on or simply discard them. Make sure the inside of the pumpkin is clean and dry before proceeding to the next step.

Step 3: Drill Holes for Perches

With a drill bit, make two holes opposite each other near the bottom of the pumpkin. These will serve as perches for the birds to rest on while they feed. Be sure to make the holes large enough to fit a sturdy twig or dowel.

Step 4: Add a Hanger

To hang the pumpkin bird feeder, you will need to add a hanger. This can be done by drilling another hole at the top of the pumpkin and threading a piece of twine or string through it. Tie the ends together to create a loop that you can hang from a tree branch or hook.

Step 5: Fill with Birdseed

Fill the pumpkin with birdseed using a funnel or scoop. Make sure the seed is distributed evenly throughout the pumpkin and not too tightly packed. Leave some room near the top to allow for movement and easy access for the birds.

Step 6: Attach the Lid

Take the top of the pumpkin that you cut off earlier and place it back on top of the pumpkin. Press down gently to secure it in place. You may want to add a few small nails or toothpicks to keep the lid from falling off if it's windy outside.

Step 7: Hang and Enjoy!

Your pumpkin bird feeder is now ready to hang! Find a spot outdoors where you can easily see it and watch as the birds come to feast. Remember to refill the seed regularly and clean out the pumpkin periodically to prevent mold or bacteria growth.
