How to Make a Boot Scraper: Keep Your Floors Clean and Shoes Polish

Have you ever walked into your home, only to realize that the mud, dirt, and snow from your shoes have created a mess on your floors? While it's important to clean your shoes before entering your home, sometimes it's just not enough. That's where a boot scraper comes in handy. A boot scraper is a simple but effective tool that can keep your floors clean and your shoes polished. In this article, we'll show you how to make your very own boot scraper.

What You'll Need

The first step to making a boot scraper is gathering all the necessary materials. Here's what you'll need:

  • Two wooden planks (6 inches wide, 24 inches long)
  • Two wooden stakes (1 inch in diameter, 24 inches long)
  • Galvanized screws (1.5 inches long)
  • Outdoor bristle brush
  • Metal scraper blade
  • Drill
  • Saw
  • Sandpaper
  • Paint or wood stain (optional)

Step-by-Step Instructions

Now that you have all the necessary materials, let's get started on making your boot scraper. Follow these simple steps:

Step 1: Cut the Planks and Stakes

Using your saw, cut each plank into two equal pieces, resulting in four 12-inch-long planks. Next, cut each stake into two equal pieces, resulting in two 12-inch-long stakes.

Step 2: Sand the Edges

After cutting the planks and stakes, use your sandpaper to smooth out any rough edges or splinters. This will prevent anyone from getting hurt when using the boot scraper.

Step 3: Drill Holes in the Planks

Take one of the planks and drill two holes, evenly spaced apart, near one end. Repeat this step with the remaining three planks.

Step 4: Attach the Stakes to the Planks

Take one of the stakes and position it vertically against one of the planks, lining up the top of the stake with the top of the plank. Use your drill to attach the stake to the plank with two screws, making sure they go through the plank and into the stake. Repeat this step with the remaining three stakes and planks.

Step 5: Attach the Brush and Scraper Blade

Take one of the planks with the stakes attached and drill two more holes near the bottom of the plank, spaced apart to match the holes at the top. Thread the outdoor bristle brush through the holes and secure it in place with screws. Next, attach the metal scraper blade to the bottom of the same plank, using screws to secure it in place.

Step 6: Optional Painting or Staining

If you want to give your boot scraper a finished look, you can paint or stain it. Make sure to let it dry completely before using it.

Using Your Boot Scraper

Congratulations! You've now made your very own boot scraper. To use it, simply place it outside your door, preferably in a spot where it won't get wet. When you come home with dirty boots, step onto the scraper and use the bristles and scraper blade to remove any dirt, mud, or snow. Your floors will stay clean, and your shoes will stay polished.

It's important to remember to clean your boot scraper regularly. You don't want the dirt and mud to build up and cause the scraper to become less effective. Simply use a broom or brush to sweep away any debris that has collected on the bristles or scraper blade.
