How to Make Burlap Windscreens: Protecting Your Plants from Wind Damage

If you're a gardener, you know how important it is to protect your plants from the elements. Wind can be especially damaging, causing plants to dry out and break. One solution is to make burlap windscreens to protect your garden from wind damage. Not only are they effective, but they also add a stylish touch to any outdoor space.

1. Gather Materials

The first step in making burlap windscreens is to gather all the necessary materials. You'll need:

  • Burlap fabric
  • Scissors
  • Tape measure
  • Rope or twine
  • Stakes or poles

Burlap fabric can be found at most fabric stores or online retailers. Make sure to get enough fabric to cover the area you want to protect.

2. Measure and Cut Burlap Fabric

Measure the area you want to protect and cut the burlap fabric to size. Leave a few extra inches on each side to allow for tying the fabric to the stakes or poles.

3. Tie Burlap to Stakes or Poles

Using rope or twine, tie the burlap fabric to the stakes or poles. Make sure the fabric is taut and secure. If using stakes, you may need to hammer them into the ground first.

4. Create Windbreaks

You can create more effective windbreaks by layering two or three sheets of burlap fabric. This will provide better protection against strong winds. Make sure to overlap the fabric and tie it securely to the stakes or poles.

5. Maintain the Burlap Screens

Check the windscreens regularly to make sure they are still secure and providing adequate protection. If the burlap fabric becomes wet, it can become heavy and sag, so make sure to remove any excess water or snow. In the spring, when the weather improves, you can take down the windscreens and store them for use next year.
