How to Lift and Store Dahlias for a Beautiful Garden Next Year

As the weather begins to cool, it's time to start thinking about lifting and storing your dahlias. These stunning flowers are a must-have in any garden, but they won't survive the winter if left in the ground. With a few simple steps, you can ensure that your dahlias come back stronger and brighter next year. Here's how:

Gather Your Supplies

Before you begin, make sure you have all the necessary supplies. You'll need a digging fork, pruning shears, a bucket, newspaper or cardboard, and a storage container.

Prune and Dig

Using your pruning shears, remove any dead or damaged foliage from your dahlia plants. Then, using your digging fork, carefully loosen the soil around the tubers. Be gentle to avoid damaging them as you lift them from the ground.

Clean and Dry

Once you've lifted your dahlias from the ground, gently shake off any excess soil. Then, use a hose or a bucket of water to wash off any remaining dirt. Allow your tubers to air dry for a day or two before moving on to the next step.

Label and Store

Before you store your dahlias for the winter, it's important to label them. Use a permanent marker to write the variety and color of each tuber on newspaper or cardboard. Then, store your labeled tubers in a cool, dry place. A cardboard box or a paper bag works well for this. Avoid storing your dahlias in plastic, as it can trap moisture and lead to rotting.

Check Regularly

Throughout the winter months, it's important to check your stored dahlias regularly for signs of rotting or mold. If you notice any issues, remove the affected tubers immediately to prevent further damage.

Plant in Spring

When spring arrives and the danger of frost has passed, it's time to plant your dahlias again. When planting, be sure to space your tubers at least 18 inches apart, burying them 6-8 inches deep. Water thoroughly and watch as your beautiful dahlias grow once again!
