How to Create a Hanging Muscari Ball

If you are looking for a unique and beautiful way to bring some greenery into your home, consider creating a hanging muscari ball. These charming balls can be hung from ceilings or hooks, adding life and color to any space. Creating a muscari ball is surprisingly easy and requires only a few materials.

Materials Needed

  • Wire mesh ball (6-10 inches in diameter)
  • Sphagnum moss
  • Muscari bulbs
  • Floral wire or fishing line
  • Scissors
  • Watering can

Preparing the Wire Mesh Ball

Begin by filling a large container with water and soaking the sphagnum moss for at least 30 minutes, until it is fully hydrated. While the moss is soaking, prepare your wire mesh ball by separating the two halves and placing them on a flat surface.

Using your scissors, cut off a small section of the soaked sphagnum moss and begin to shape it around the wire frame. As you work, be sure to press the moss firmly against the wire to ensure that it adheres properly. Continue working in this fashion until the entire wire frame is covered in a layer of moss.

Planting the Muscari Bulbs

Next, it is time to plant your muscari bulbs. Begin by selecting a bulb and gently pulling apart the roots to loosen them. Place the bulb in the center of the moss-covered wire ball and use your fingers to surround it with additional moss, pressing down lightly as you go.

Repeat this process with each of the remaining bulbs, spacing them out evenly around the ball. Be sure to plant the bulbs deeply enough that they will not be dislodged by movement, but not so deeply that their shoots cannot reach the surface.

Hanging the Muscari Ball

Once all of your bulbs have been planted, it is time to hang your muscari ball. Using either floral wire or fishing line, create a sturdy loop around the top of the ball. This loop should be able to support the full weight of the ball once it is filled with water.

Hang your muscari ball in a location where it will receive plenty of sunlight and water it regularly to keep the soil moist. Over time, the muscari bulbs will begin to sprout and grow, producing a beautiful and unique display that will bring a touch of nature into your home.
